“Heather began working with me in the marketing department of Teknion Furniture Systems in 1989 … Heather has also consulted to my new venture, Advanced Glazings, as a writer and as a sounding board. She thinks strategically about how to bridge the gap between ourselves as producers and our various client types. She takes complex ideas and finds the most effective way to articulate them.”

Herman Koza,
Vice President,
Sales and Marketing
Advanced Glazings Ltd.

“Heather’s sense of community shows in how she uses her knowledge. She explains technical information so that it’s accessible and interesting. From the start, she gave us detailed steps, making it simple for us to roll this website out.”

Radha Nayar,
Administrative Coordinator
Immigrant Women’s Health Centre

“All in all, working with Heather was a pleasure and her work, impeccable. There should be no hesitation in hiring her and I would be happy to give a glowing reference to anyone who asks.”

About me

My work

I’m a marketing writer, editor and project coordinator and I’ve made a living doing this for more than twenty years.

I’ve written many different kinds of print and digital materials, including websites, interactive DVDs, brochures, newsletters, white papers, fact sheets, case studies, annual reports, business plans and journal articles.

My background

I’ve been writing marketing copy since the mid-1980s, and have been freelancing since 1993. My interests have always been in science-y areas: manufacturing, engineering and technology development, etc., but I’m also fascinated by how people think, learn and communicate.

I’ve got a BA from the University of Western Ontario and a BAA in journalism from Ryerson University. I also have Canadian Securities Course certification.

After university, I joined J. Walter Thompson Advertising, then IMS (a media-research-software developer). My last job before I started freelancing was in the marketing department of a three-year-old start-up, Teknion Furniture Systems — now an internationally established company.

As Teknion’s business took off, the demands and opportunities grew with it. This provided an on-the-spot marketing school for me, and I came away with great experience and a keen interest in helping businesses grow. And when I began freelancing, Teknion was my first client.

I’ve since gone on to consult with Bell Canada, Ford, the LCBO, Ryerson University and many other large and small organizations. During the dot-com boom, I worked with several start-ups, and was involved in the venture capital process twice.

Most of my work is on the marketing side, but my journalism has appeared in The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, Information Highways, The Media Book, Books in Canada and other publications.

In addition to my paid work, I’ve been the president of a 4,000-member technology non-profit, sat on boards, was a jurist for several years for the Canadian New Media Awards, and was a CNMA finalist in the “Volunteer of the Year” category.
